A Mammography Technician (Mammo Tech) is a specialized radiologic technologist who operates mammography equipment to perform diagnostic imaging procedures for detecting breast abnormalities. These images, known as mammograms, help to screen for breast cancer and other breast-related conditions. Mammography Technicians are trained to perform the procedure, ensure patient comfort, maintain a high standard of image quality, and assist in patient care throughout the process.
\n\nKey Responsibilities:\n\n\n
Performing Mammograms:
\n
\nPosition and prepare patients for mammography exams, ensuring they are comfortable and properly positioned.\nOperate mammography equipment to capture clear, accurate images of the breast tissue.\nEnsure proper compression of the breast during imaging to obtain the best possible images while minimizing discomfort for the patient.\nAssist patients with undressing and putting on a gown, as well as positioning the breast for imaging.\nPerform digital mammograms and, if necessary, additional views to obtain complete images of the breast.\n\n\n\n
Patient Care and Comfort:
\n
\nGreet patients and explain the procedure, answering any questions to alleviate anxiety.\nEducate patients on the importance of mammograms, helping them understand the process and ensuring they know what to expect.\nReassure patients during the exam, maintaining a calm and empathetic demeanor.\nMonitor patients for discomfort or any issues during the procedure and adjust accordingly.\n\n\n\n
Quality Control and Image Evaluation:

\nReview mammograms for clarity and completeness, ensuring the images meet diagnostic standards.\nEnsure that images are free from artifacts or distortions that could hinder diagnosis.\nWork closely with radiologists to ensure that high-quality images are produced and evaluate whether additional views or retakes are necessary.\nAssist in conducting breast ultrasound or stereotactic biopsy procedures if needed to further investigate abnormalities found in mammograms.\n\n\n\n
Equipment Maintenance and Safety:
\n
\nEnsure proper operation of mammography equipment, troubleshooting any technical issues as needed.\nPerform routine maintenance and cleaning of the equipment, following safety protocols and manufacturer guidelines.\nFollow safety standards for radiation protection to minimize patient and staff exposure.\nEnsure the machine is calibrated and functioning correctly to provide optimal images.\n\n\n\n
Record Keeping and Documentation:
\n
\nMaintain patient records, including medical history, previous mammogram results, and details of the current exam.\nDocument relevant patient information, such as imaging results, positioning, and any special instructions or requests from the physician.\nEnsure all procedures, patient information, and images are properly logged into the hospital’s Electronic Health Records (EHR) system.\n\n\n\n
Collaboration with Medical Team:

\nCommunicate effectively with radiologists and physicians regarding images that may require further attention or additional imaging.\nAssist in explaining test results to patients, helping them understand what comes next in the process if further evaluation or follow-up is needed.\nWork closely with the healthcare team to ensure continuity of care for the patient, especially if abnormal results are found.\n\n\n\n
Adherence to Safety and Regulatory Standards:

\nEnsure compliance with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations regarding patient privacy and confidentiality.\nFollow all radiation safety protocols to protect both patients and staff from unnecessary exposure.\nAdhere to American College of Radiology (ACR) and FDA guidelines for mammography procedures and safety.\n\n\n\n
Patient Education:
\n
\nProvide patients with post-exam care instructions and answer any questions regarding the results, follow-up, or potential next steps.\nEducate patients on the importance of regular mammograms and breast health, including self-examination and lifestyle factors that affect breast health.\n\n\n
