Job Summary

  • Identifies basic and complex graphic design projects and performs research, conceptualizes design, sets timeline, and designs visual elements for use in a variety of marketing and communications needs, adhering to IU brand guidelines.
  • Regularly consults with marketing and communications staff and other key stakeholders to determine project needs and ensure graphic design elements align with strategy and objectives.
  • Designs the layout and format for digital and print graphic design content, including selection of colors, images, fonts, logos, and placement, for various marketing and communications needs, audiences, and platforms; may delegate basic design tasks to Graphic Design Assistant(s).
  • Creates images, graphic elements, illustrations, and other visual content using a variety of graphic software, including Adobe Creative Suite and PowerPoint; takes on special and/or urgent projects.
  • Seeks input from peers and stakeholders on a variety of graphic design elements to evaluate effectiveness of different aesthetics, colors, fonts, images, etc.
  • May provide organizational training on graphic design methodology and strategy.
  • May provide guidance to Graphic Design Assistants.
Department-specific responsibilities:
  • Responsible for graphic design; digital signage design and maintenance; and social/interactive media development.
  • Conceptualize, design, and produce print and electronic communications.
  • Organize and document projects.
  • Consult with senior managers, technical staff and clients to conceptualize and create graphical pieces that communicate the brand, strategic initiatives, and special projects of the Office of the Vice President for Information Technology and University Information Technology Services, and its various research partners to local, national, and international audiences.
  • Design visual communications campaigns, products, and pieces that communicate IU's standing as a first-tier research university.
  • Illustrate complex and abstract concepts in visual forms meaningful to audiences of non-specialists and to granting agencies.
  • Works with contract employees, hourly staff, and vendors involved with graphic production and creative projects.
  • Assess and select vendors who produce the work.
  • Oversee the budgets related to production.
  • Negotiate with vendors, and often advise them on how to achieve the desired graphical effects.
  • Identify design needs in concert with other ITCO designers and leadership.


Qualifications

EDUCATION
Required
  • Bachelor's degree in graphic design, art, or a related field.
WORK EXPERIENCE
Required
  • 2 years in a relevant field.
Combinations of related education and experience may be considered.

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
